Adapting to hard times in order to safeguard the future

Expressing concern over the COVID-19 pandemic and talks about how harnessing positive emotions is essential during these trying times

The coronavirus pandemic has shaken up the world. The highly contagious, pneumonia-like disease has brought about a reality of uncertainty, on a scale which the vast majority of us have not witnessed before.

Governments across the entire world have resorted to drastic measures in their bid to contain and minimise the disease’s transmission, and effectively safeguard people’s health.

Being a native Italian I am admittedly deeply concerned regarding the ongoing situation in my country and the rest of the world, including the ever increasing number of active cases and victims seemingly displaying no will to slow down.

With this in mind, we at BtoBet have not taken the novel coronavirus threat lightly. Through a blanket decision effecting all of the company’s offices in different countries, we’ve proactively shifted all operations to a teleworking phase until the situation reverts to normality. This decision was possible thanks to the advanced infrastructure the company has at its disposal, and by having all of the necessary cloud-based tool in place ensuring that the daily processes remain untouched.

We have also gone to great lengths to safeguard our partners’ interests, establishing strong work guidelines to ensure that this imposed situation will not have a negative toll for our partners worldwide.

Coming out of this stronger

With countries resorting to dramatic measures as they fight tooth and nail to minimise the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is undoubtedly taking a toll on people’s mental health and creating a negative environment, as well. Lest we forget, humans are essentially social creatures, keen on interacting and engaging with other fellow individuals.

Yet, during these trying times, we are asked to put aside this natural trait. But that doesn’t mean you should give up, does it?

In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper “La Repubblica,” Pope Francis epitomised, not only the difficult situation the entire world is experiencing through the hardships delivered by COVID-19, but has further opined on how one can pass these days in a way that they will not be wasted.

“We must rediscover the concreteness of little things, small gestures of attention we can offer to those close to us, our family, our friends. We must understand that in small things lies our treasure. These gestures of tenderness, affection, compassion, are minimal and tend to be lost in the anonymity of everyday life, but they are nonetheless decisive, important. For example, a hot meal, a caress, a hug, a phone call… They are familiar gestures of attention to the details of everyday life that make life meaningful and create communion and communication amongs us,” he emphasised.

In essence, we have to do our utmost to foster positive emotions throughout these enduring times.

We have to savour the small moments, strengthen our connections and – for all those affected by the lockdown – take the opportunity to make amends and spend some quality time and communicate with their loved ones. More importantly, we have to look for the good in others, and make the most of the best in human nature.

Taking charge of our mental health and capturing the small moments will help as we go further into the unknown. If we can foster positive emotions, the flow-on effects will be well researched and well documented.
